X11 (xterm) apps on Leopard dock - strange behaviour

On moving to Leopard, I have some trouble with my xterm dock item.
Launching it from the dock causes the active icon to be added to the dock, but no new window is launched. Explicitly launching a new window causes a second active icon to be added to the dock (total of 3).
Closing is similar - I have to quit twice.
Not sure if it happens with other X11 apps - haven't tried anything else.
Wondering if anyone else has noticed the same.
Have to clean out my preferences as well - that might help.
Generally, different behaviour using xterm. Bash shell prompt is different - directory name expansion doesn't have a terminating '/' for the first level directory. Switching back and forth between apps using Ctrl-Tab is fine, but when I switch to xterm, no active window is foregrounded. I have to explicitly select a window to foreground it.
