Fast User Switching

I'm here on my Tiger machine and am creating user accounts for my kids. I have Fast User Switching enabled in the Options, but for some reason, when my son is logged in, his user name does not appear in the top right of the menu as my daughters does for fast user switching. All he has in his is the date and time. In other words, we cannot Fast User Switch out of my son's account due to no names showing for Fast User Switching. As I said, it is fine when my daughter is logged in. Any help would be appreciated.

As a general rule I do not like fast user switching. Does not cause as many issues as File Vault but still having applications open in other profiles can cause some headaches especially those rare occasions when a forced shut down is required.

One thing you could try is, while logged in to your son's account, double-click "/System" > "Library" > "CoreServices" > "Menu Extras" > "User.menu" to see if that causes the item to appear.

If not, try removing the "com.apple.systemuiserver.plist" file from your son's "~/Library/Preferences" folder, log out and back in, then repeat the above procedure. However after removing the file, it will also be necessary to reconfigure the other menu extras and menulets via "System Preferences", etc.
