g3 imac not recognizing external burner

so.. i picked up an old g3 imac from a guy to use as an internet portal (and jukebox).

the specs are as follows:
400 mhz powerpc g3
768 mb sdram
running OS version 10.3.9

my burner is an external dvd-rw/cd-rw burner that hooks up through the usb port (and it works fine on my powerbook).

on the imac, itunes will recognize the external burner, but ONLY as a cd-drive. when i try to burn music onto a cd-r, itunes says that it can't find a burner.

is this possibly related to the fact that the usb port on this imac is of an older generation? (according to the system profiler, the usb port has a speed of up to 12 mb/s and a bus power of 500). if that's the case, is there any way around this?

from what i understand it's quite difficult/expensive (if not impossible) to add an internal cd-rw drive to these older g3 imacs. is that also true? and, if so... does anybody want to buy an imac for $200?

Actually the 400Meg iMacs are much easier to install HDs and CD drives than the tray loaders. That said should you decide to try a swap; shut it down and unplug it for a couple of days. No way do you want the full voltage from the CRT zapping through your sweaty palms to ground. Hopefully someone can post a link. If not I will search my archives and see if I still have directions for this.

One other thought; be sure the you are connecting the USB to the port on the computer not the keyboard. The keyboard is essentially an unpowered port and some devices simply do not work properly from that port.

The iLife programs don't play nice with external burners (or many internal third party burners) unless you modify them with Patchburn or otherwise.

See Accelerate Your Macintosh! News Page - 4/17/07 for lots of information on using drives with Macs.

Also, with USB 1.1, data transfer will be slow.
