smtp, Mail & non-sympatico email

a few days ago, I stopped being able to send mail with Mail. 1.3.11. I had been using smtp1.sympatico.ca. So I switched to what they suggested in my installation package: smtphm.sympatico.ca... that doesn't work either. I called them up, they said... if the address doesn't have @sympatico.ca in it's title, than it won't work! I insisted, it had been working. They said, well... it can work, but they can't help.

If anyone can help, It would be so so appreciated!

----what I've tried----

1. outgoing server settings:
server port: 25
(check) use SSL
authentication: password (user name and password on the card in sympatico installation package)

error: The SMTP server “smtphm.sympatico.ca” rejected the password for user “mildred

2. outgoing server settings:
server port: 25
(uncheck) use SSL
authentication: password

error: The SMTP server “smtphm.sympatico.ca” doesn’t support authentication. Please check your account settings and try again.

3. outgoing server settings:
server port: 25
(uncheck) use SSL
authentication: none

error: The sender address mildred@example.com was rejected by the server

Not that I can help but those responses are so typical of Bell. A local Toronto Star reporter started a Bell complaint section and it was packed in a day. I hope someone like Gordguide or MacDoc can help you

Every couple of weeks I have to call Bell to get them to fix my pop acount. It seems every so often the settings change(their end). So the pop has gone from pop1 - pop8. It is just stupid.

I use Thunderbird as my emailer, and my settings are:

POP Mail Server
Server name: pophm.sympatico.ca
Port: 995
Security settings: SSL

Outgoing SMTP server: smtphm.sympatico.ca

what are your outgoing server settings, and do they allow you to send mail connected to an address that does not contain "@sympatico.ca" in it?

Sympatico does not allow sending mail with address that does not contain "@sympatico.ca" through your emailer. My friend with another ISP tried to send mail from my place using Entourage on his Powerbook. Sympatico didn't allow that to happen so the mail didn't get anywhere.

Clarification

I should clarify the issue with sending mail with other email addresses.

My friend has his usual ISP settings on his Powerbook. He can go online at my place, except sending email directly from Entourage on his Powerbook.

I have other email addresses that do not have "@sympatico.ca". I can send email without any problem. The incoming POP3 mail servers for each of these different email addresses are different, but the outgoing SMTP server is smtphm.sympatico.ca, port 25, secure connection: TLS (forgot to mention this in the last post, sorry).

oh... okay, that's interesting! Because, I do have my own domain(s)... so what I'm not clear about is... you can do that, use another ISP as an email server? can you explain?
