Choppy video on external monitor

Hello,

I've got a follow-up question to an earlier posting. Yesterday, an awesome forum member sorted out a problem for hooking up a 22" monitor to my G4 ibook (1.33Ghz with 512 ram). After solving my dilemma so that I could actually use the monitor, I'm having problems watching video...it seems choppy.

One other thing to note, using the mini-DVI to hook up to the monitor, it switches to the analog mode on the monitor itself. I'm not really sure if this has much of an effect on that, but I just thought I'd throw in that information.

thanks so much for your time.

Choppy video on a second display typically means it's experiencing a limitation due to video memory. Based on the specs you posted your ram is likely the cause.

With with the display spanning hack, you cannot use your 22" display on a digital connection - the video out port on the iBook is analog only, and nothing can change that. It's mini-VGA out, not mini-DVI out. The iBook's video card is 32 MB in size - 16 MB per display. If you want the full 32 MB on the 22", it has to mirror, not span, and therefore you'd be back to your previous problem - non-native and a smaller resolution on the 22" display. A measly 16 MB of VRAM may not be enough to 'smooth out' the 22" LCD for best performance at its native resolution.

Question

Hi Friends!
Sorry to dredge up this old thread, but I figured that since it's the same topic, it's better than me creating a new one.

I have a 12" iBook 1.33 and I just bought a 17" LCD monitor to use as an external monitor.
But I see that the external monitor port on this iBook is a dinky little thing that looks nothing like the VGA connector on the LCD monitor.

I reckon that there's a simple adapter that I plug between the monitor and the iBook.

So that I can phone up some stores and ask for one, would anyone please tell me what the monitor adapter is called?

Thanking you in advance!

SoyMac: You need a mini-VGA-to-VGA adapter. About $30:

Thanks, Peeps!
I now have a 17" LCD screen running beside my iBook, thanks to the mini-DVI-VGA adapter from the good folks at The Mac Group, and the excellent and simple Screen Spanning Doctor software, from:

(The next thing I'm doing today, is sending these guys a donation for this very nice software! )

I am very happy with my little two-monitor, one-laptop studio!
