Replace iMac (G4 flat panel) SuperDrive? or buy external?

I'm looking for solution to a SuperDrive problems on flat panel iMac. It hasn't been working (not reading DVDs). I'm sure it needs to be replaced. Should I try to replace the old internal SuperDrive or buy an external writer? If I choose to replace, then what model is recommended?

One more thing...if I do decide to go with an external...will I be able to install Tiger (on DVD disc). Do I need FireWire or is a USB writer ok? I've read somewhere that you can't "boot" from an external? What does that mean exactly?

I encountered that very problem with my old iMac G4. I opted to replace the the internal drive and the whole job, labour included cost me under $100, which to me was worth it versus the hassle and space of having to rely on an external drive.

$100...for everything? I like the sound of that. I'm very nervous of doing it myself. I'd much rather spend a few extra bucks and have a pro do it.

You can boot from a DVD player/writer hooked up by FireWire on your computer, and as well can boot from an external FireWire-connected hard drive.

Make sure you go with a reputable Authorized Apple repair service to get the fix done. Someone close to where you are could recommend one, perhaps.
