How to copy text from a password protected pdf on a mac in 2 seconds

All you have to do is find the pdf file you want that is password protected or save it to the desktop, right click it and click open with preview. Once it is opened in preview you can copy (Command C) or highlight text right click and copy! Voila

Have you actually ever tried that?

When I open the document in preview and try to copy a bit of the text, no matter how I copy, I get this window:

I want to copy the text, not take picture or a screen shot.

Preview's Inspector should tell you what permissions you have. If the Inspector pallet isn't visible, go to Tools>Show Inspector. Activate the Padlock icon. An unprotected documents says "You have full permissions to this PDF. You can copy text, print or make changes to the PDF and save." Don't have a locked one at hand.

For grins, bring up the Print window for any document (say this web page). Under the PDF 'button', choose Save as PDF... In the resulting window, there will be a Security Options... button which will allow you to set passwords for various activities.

Thanks Craig, I know all that.

The question was specifically about copying a short bit of text from a protected pdf document.
Krispfis seems to think opening the document in preview bypasses the protection and lets one copy portions of the text. His post comes across as if I'm pretty stupid not to know that. Also come across as if it's something he/she does all the time.

Granted, there are a lot of things about the Mac and OS I don't know, but opening a protected pdf in preview doesn't affect the copy protection at all.

I used to use Kvisoft flip book maker to transfer the PDF files to ebooks. But it was only useful for Windows OS. I'm sure this one can be needed by more persons as the Apple products getting popularized.

You could try PDFKey Pro:

Costs $27. It's worked in every instance where I've tried it - YMMV.
