Over the past couple days I've had a strange issue with my iPod video (which I bought shortly after it came out, thus I think it's out of warranty). The hard drive "knocks/clicks" upon boot, and when trying to sync with iTunes. It operates fine playing songs and videos.
Lately, I've been unable to sync with iTunes. I plug the iPod in, iTunes sees it then hangs, and the iPod knocks/clicks for about 30 seconds and then it freezes up. Very irritating.
From tests it seems the drive is OK, although I beg to differ. I would try a Restore if I could get iTunes to work with it.
Any ideas? Also, does anyone know how much a 30 GB drive for it costs? I'm willing to do the repair myself.
Hold down the Menu and center button for 5 or so second until it resets. Take your finger off the menu button and but it on the previous button (rewind). This will put you through an iPod diagnostics test. If you do not see a problem there, I would suggest restoring you're iPod.

How long after they came out did you buy it? These were released in October 2005. Check you warranty by entering your serial number on www.apple.com/support (see the box middle right). Better yet, check your receipt. Why be so blase about a warranty that makes a difference between getting your iPod fixed, or not? If a restore doesn't work, that is.

Audiodan, I have tried everything (except Restore because I can't keep iTunes from freezing when I plug the iPod in) you said before I posted.
HowEver, checked with the support site. Alas, I'm out of warranty as I apparently bought it in November (from Carbon Computing, and I registered it, so the site would be correct).
It's so odd that I can do everything on the iPod perfectly fine, except connect to the Mac, and then I get "the noise". I'll try some other stuff tomorrow, and keep you posted.
Okay, so you're a month and a half out of warranty. I've seen the Genius desk in Yorkdale sell warranties for iPods slightly out of warranty, although I doubt that long. But why not just go there, be polite, and ask what they can do? The worst that can happen is they'll do nothing, the best would seem to be they sell you $90 AppleCare, good until next November, and replace your iPod if it needs it, since that appears to be the only thing they do after they sell AppleCare for an iPod. Nothing ventured, as they say.
Or perhaps a disk utility or file utility app would work: as in, erase the iPod and start again.
If there isn't a friendly genius at the apple store, you can try these guys. irepair.ca they got a b&m store on college that can sell you a hard drive if you need it and put it in for free, and give you a free diagnosis if you're not sure what is wrong.
