Trying to copy a UDF DVD

Hi,

I am running Tiger on a G5 dual 2.0 ghz. (Panther is available). Is there a way to copy this non-copyrighted UDF DVD? It shows up and I can see there are Audio TS and Video TS files but the Mac won’t play the dvd and says that it is unsupported media. Will Panther support it? Can it be copied with a CD burner? (as in, on my PC which sees it and plays it). I did copy it with Disk Utility on the Mac before realizing there might be a problem and the copy shows the files and title too but won’t play it and the copy, unlike the original, won’t play on my PC.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Is there a message that the DVD Player pops up or does it just not play?

If it is a properly formatted DVD then you should be able to use Mac the Ripper to copy regioin-free and macro-free (etc.). From here you can either burn it do disk or compress it into a smaller format. I've found it very helpful as it doesn't require me to reset my DVD drive just to play the few DVDs I have from Britain.

Hi Orion,

I'm now perplexed. In order to answer your question I put the DVD back in the drive...and it played. Earlier on I had it in and out of that drive at least a couple times with no luck playing it.

I decided to try playing my copy but I get the message "Supported Disk not available" in the screen where the dvd would play in the DVD player.

Now I"m not sure what to do. Try making a new copy with Disk Utility or try Mack the Ripper?

The DVD was produced in Canada with the intent that it be copied and distributed. Is it maybe my machine being finicky?

Thanks

So, I went ahead and ripped the DVD with Mac the Ripper....but now what? I don't know what to do next in order to put it on a blank DVD. I have a file folder that now contains the Video_TS and Audio_TS file folders. (I just noted, though that the Audio_TS file has nothing in it....not sure if this is a problem.)

I don't know how to take these folders and make my new dvd. Do I simply dragged them both on to my DVD drive with a blank DVD in it?

thanks

Roxio's Popcorn software will easily make usable DVD copies of Video/ Audio_TS folders.

But I don't know of freeware/ shareware alternatives.

Sometimes a disk error will pop up if either the disk or the drive's lens are dirty. If you're finding errors more often than not with multiple disks I'd start to suspect the drive. There really won't be any advantage to either Panther or Tiger. It's likely related to the hardware.

As for Mac the Ripper, the folder it creates is a DVD-format folder. You should be able to burn the contents of the folder directly to a DVD; just don't include the enclosing folder. Only copy the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders. Oh, and don't worry: The audio folder is always empty unless they have included some DVD Audio (usually never do).

If you're just looking to play the DVD once, you can simply launch DVD Player, choose "Open DVD Media" and point it at the VIDEO_TS folder you copied with Mac the Ripper. Press play and you're watching the movie.

If it fails at this point you may well have a damaged disk (hence a broken copy) or the drive's lens may be out of alignment (meaning it can't copy properly). I had this happen with a drive on my G4 tower. DVDs were no problem but it couldn't read or copy audio CDs worth... er, you know ^_^;

Do you have Toast for burning? If yes, click the Data tab then DVD-ROM. Click on New Disc and drag the VIDEO_TS / AUDIO_TS in. Click Burn.

Thats providing its already smaller than 4.4 gigs. if it isnt, you can use DVD2oneX to shrink it down.

Hi Orion and everyone helping,

I'm quite a novice with all this so I have to ask.....how do I do this, how do I burn the contents directly to a DVD? I opened the folder with the VIDEO_TS contents, copied all the files but do I paste them somewhere? I've put a blank DVD into my drive and tried pasting the contents onto it in Disk Utility but, well, that didn't work. I don't have Toast, but I do have DVD Studio Pro and, of course, iDVD. I tried importing into Studio Pro but either did it wrong or it can't import that kind of asset.

Thanks again (...oh, and for the reassurance about the empty Audio_TS folder)

PS....I copied a DVD once before with no problem by creating a disk image. But the disk image this one created was not usuable (or I did something wrong) and as I mentioned earlier my Mac didn't even recognize this dvd initially...

If the size of the VIDEO_TS folder is more than about 4.4 GB then you'll need to recompress it to fit on a standard, single-layered DVD just as RatsOnMacAttack stated. If not then you should be able to use Disk Utility to do it. Just insert the blank DVD, name it something appropriate (if you like), drag both the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders to the disk (not the contents, the actual folders) and then press the "burn disk" button. Sit back and wait.

If there is too much information to put on the disk you will get an warning message that says so.

Before trying to burn the new DVD try playing the copied VIDEO_TS contents with the DVD Player app. No point in wasting a disk if it doesn't work ^_^

Since it is a non-copyrighted DVD he can bypass Mac The Ripper altogether and just use Toast disk to disk
