migrating from a PPC to an Intel Mac; Rosetta apps misbehaving

When I traded up to an iMac Core 2 duo from a PowerMac G5 dual 1.8, I had all my apps and files stored on an external firewire drive and I used Apple's Migration Assistant to get those files on the new Mac. A short while later I started to notice that MS Office apps and Adobe Reader were occasionally refusing to start up, though always solveable by a restart. At first I thought the problem was one of my Preference Panes (I use Default Folder, MaxMenus and Fruit Menu) and I tried deactivating them in various combinations, but it didn't solve my problem. Finally, after more diagnostics, I found that I could repeat the problem by opening an attachment in Entourage and thereafter trying to start that application in the Finder or through one of the menu enhancers. What I then did was to delete all files relating to Adobe Reader and MS Office, including prefs, and reinstalling them from scratch. So far it appears to have solved the problem but it has only been a day since I reinstalled those apps. All of them run in Rosetta and although I haven't read anywhere about the specific problem I had, I did read about a problem starting up Rosetta apps.

Has anyone else experienced this problem or seen it documented elsewhere? Might this be a reason not to use Migration Assistant when moving from a PPC to an Intel Mac?

Funny you should ask this--this KB article just came through my RSS:

I just upgraded a PPC to Intel iMac as well, and found that there were several programs, including MS Office that I had to reinstall. The majority of my apps moved over fine--but some did not.

It's a common thing--hope this helps.

I just purchased a MacBook, and migrated from an iBook G4. I had some difficulty opening apps as well. I hesitated to migrate from the PPC to Intel, and I should have followed that instinct.

I've since done an entirely fresh install of the OS, updates, and applications, as well as bringing all my preferences, bookmarks, and app data.

It took awhile, but I have noticed a stabilty/speed increase, as well as having more disk space.

I'd say the positives of Migration assistant outweigh the negatives.

I had a few bits of erratic behaviours on migration and did need to check my versions.

A combo update and a bit of Onyx and it settled down.

Office has been treacherous and is getting out of it's service life.

No question some of the add ons can cause issues. I had to switch to Steermouse ( excellent ) away from MS mouse and keyboard software.
I really hate the way MS intrudes on the OS.

There are well crafted apps and utilities......and then there are MS stuff

That said there have been tons of reports of Acrobat problems ever since 5. and certainly not restricted to Intel.

For instance

Quote:
Also fixes Acrobat launching bug It appears that this update also resolves an issue where Adobe Acrobat fails to launch on systems with the QuickTime 7.1 update. This bug has been associated with both QuickTime …
from MacFixit

One thing to be aware of - there are a number of minefields in 10.4.8 that complicate trying to figure out what is realted to migration and what is related to the updates.

I've never seen the kind of destroyed systems a couple of clients experienced ( and are described online by others as well )
