.wmv files won't play and where the hell is X11user.pkg?
I switched from Windoze to Mac less than 24 hours ago and am delighted with how easy it was to set up the iMac and how easy it was to transfer everything from the Win2K box using my home network. All is running sweetly except for two problems:
1. .wmv files downloaded using the latest version of Firefox won't play. Tiger insists in trying to open the movie clips with Excel and Quicktime comes up with an error - any suggestions?
2. After downloading Open Office, in the hope of avoiding anything "Gates", it asks for X11 which is supposedly on the Mac OS X install disk(s) but all I can find is the X11SDK.pkg and the O.O. docs are very specific in asking for User X11. Is there a URL where I can get hold of UserX11.pkg or are tthe O.O. docs being too specific and will X11SDK.pkg do the job?
Any comments on the compatibility of O.O. to MS Office would also be appreciated.
Download Flip4Mac. it will play WMV files through Quicktime. Microsoft stopped updating their media player and instead opted to buy a company that makes a Quicktime plugin so they could offer it as their solution for Mac users.
X11 is an optional install, as are the Developer Tools. If it's installed, you will find it in Applications: Utilities. If it's not there, pop in your Installation CD/DVD and restart. You want to look for "Perform Additional Installations" (or something like that).
The installer won't overwrite anything that's already properly installed unless you erase or reformat the disk (which you don't want to do, so don't).
To start up from the Install Disk, hold the "C" key upon startup or (works better sometimes) pop your DVD in first, then go to System Preferences: Startup Disk and select the Install Disk, then restart.
After you've installed Flip4Mac, also get the Perian Codec collection and you should be good to go.

Skip installing X11, as it's a little more then the average user probably wants to get their hands dirty with. Download NeoOffice, it's a branch off of the OpenOffice project that you can install natively in OS X.
Thanks. Downloaded Flip4Mac, it worked like a charm. NeoOffice is on its way down "as we speak". I say again, how delighted I am with the switch. The support from the community gives some additional confidence.
What do I do if I get this message when I try to play a .wmv file.
I have downloaded all the suggested apps in this thread; VLC as well - still no go.
And if I look at the compatible players, it gives me Window Media Player 10 and 11 (Beta) for Windows.

Unfortunately, this means that you have to have Windows Media Player 10 (or newer) which means that you have to have Windows since WMP 10+ is Windows only. This may change in the future... but I wouldn't rely on it.

Do you have any idea if Windows media player 10 will run on Windows 98SE? Or to be more accurate, on Virtual PC with Windows 98SE?
When I click on download of Windows media Player 10, I expected to see the Windows system requirements and the Windows exe file for download, but the idiotic Microsoft website comes up with a message saying: "I see you're on a Mac, here, download WMP 9 or Flip4Mac - neither one of these applications of course will work. People at Microsoft really have rocks in their heads.
