for what its worth... no really, what is it worth?
Anybody have any ideas on the value of my G4 17" iMac 1.25GHz... I have to file a claim with Air Canada who lost it on route to Vancouver (arrrrggh! bastards! I'm never flying AC again!) Everywhere I've seen the prices are all over the place so thought I'd give posting here a chance...
Specs:
G4 1.25GHz 17" iMac
80gig 7200 rpm HD
airport card
768 MB RAM
Superdrive
OSX Tiger w/install disks
standard wired mac keyboard
mighty mouse
original packaging, manuals, etc
So if anybody has a blackbook price I would really appreciate it. I've tried asking at Authorized Mac Resellers but they'll only give me the trade in value. Thanks in advance to anyone/everyone at ehmac who replies, you guys are the best.
I'd say it'd go anywhere between $600 - $850 (max)
You've got an advantage since it's a collectors piece. That's probably why you've noticed the prices are all over the place. People want the more for the look than the use.
Tho, I'm sure some more "in the know" could advise you better.
I would state the value as what it cost you - that's what you will have to pay to replace the system, so that is what they should be paying. It is similar with insurance claims - you claim what the system cost at purchase time, not the depreciated value.
If you would rather claim what the system is worth today, I would ballpark around $700-$750, since that was one of Apple's best designs.
On Saturday, Carbon had a 20" with similar specs for $1250.
Correct me if I am wrong, but Air Canada should be paying the replacement value and not the current, street price of the system. It's not your fault they lost it, so I don't think you should take the penalty.

This is absolutely correct. You should be quoting the cost of an equivalent replacement, which would be an 17" iMac Core 2 Duo at approx $1500.

Given that your model was the base model (but still had dedicated graphics), the equivelant replacement would be just over $2,000. This includes a second-model iMac (17" with dedicated graphics), a RAM upgrade (since you upgraded your RAM, and added an AirPort card), and AppleCare (Approximates the cost of the Mighty Mouse and Tiger, which are included with the new iMac)
Thanks to everyone for the responses... I agree that I would love to get an equivalant replacement, however I found out that AC will only compensate a maximum of 1500 CAN for lost items so I'm requesting to be compensated for the full amount.
Of course I could put up more of a fuss but they claim absolutely no responsibility for loss or damage to electronic goods. Additionally, I am not the original owner so 1500 (I think the original sold for $1800 minus the ram upgrades) does not put me at a loss financially, with the exception of some freelance work that I was forced to turn down.
The reason I was asking the market price is because I got a very good deal on the computer awhile ago and although I have a bill of sale from that, I don't feel that I should be penalized and forced to receive less than market value because of their negligence.
Anyways, my claim has been filed so I've been informed that it takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks to process it. Of course I won't wait that long before I start hounding them but I don't expect it to be resolved anytime soon. Dealing with AC has been such a pain in the ass, the only phone numbers that they give you are for call centers in India who read to you from a script. They used to have an ombudsman but apparently that fell by the wayside as well. Needless to say, I'm not holding my breath... I'll keep you all posted if your still interested.
one little thing I have found is that AC hates bad PR in the papers, so if your local has a consumer writer give her or him the details and see where that goes. Just a little help from a cage rattler
