I wish I was hearing voices...but alas there is no sound

I am running an IMAC G5 2Ghz about 14 months old (OSX10.4.2 with all the system upgrades). My computer is only running on the factory installed speakers. The past few days my sound cuts out when I have been playing iTunes. It almost sounds like the system keeps disconnecting itself - like the cord is being jiggled. If I hit the volume keys a few times it seems to come back but will shortly short circuit itself again. Any advice or suggestions. No Applecare.

I could try that if I knew how.

Thanks djstp, I will see if that works. Could it actually be software related that can be fixed by 'repairing permissions'?

The problem only happens intermittently. I have itunes playing right now so will have to wait and see if it happens again.

Would upgrading the machine to the most current 10.4.8 help? Maybe.

I know I did the most recent upgrade (I think it was last week) hmm seems like that is the same time this whole thing started.... Since I 'repaired' I have had iTunes playing and it hasn't happened. That has been almost three hours (knock on the proverbial wood).
Can anyone explain why that would have worked?
