iPhoto / Keynote Slides + --> Projector???

Hello,

A few friends and I are doing a tribute for a friend who has passed away recently, and the whole thing is going to be huge (media will be there), and so I'm freaking out. I'm in charge of the beautiful transitioning slide show of various pictures of him. The problem??? Although I've been poking around and am able to make something happen it's not what I really want and I've NEVER made a slide show before, so I have a few questions:

Do I use Keynote or iPhoto Slide show?
I need to be able to add notes to each photo siting the photographer, museum, art piece, etc. (He's an artist).

If I use Keynote, how do I get it to do the slide show full screen like they do with the iPhoto slide show? I like the transitions they use, being able to scan photo. Oh! which reminds me how do I control the direction of the transitions???

Can I just take a slide show from iPhoto and put it into Keynote to add stuff to?

Projector... Does the projector have to be mac compatible?

I'll probably have more questions based on your replies, but that's it for now.

Thank you!!!!

Hey, I did something like this recently. I'd get your photos ready in iPhoto, bring them into Keynote and get it all organized. Then I'd export it as a quicktime movie, this keeps everything set. You would need Quicktime Pro, and then you could play the movie full screen (on the projector) while you could still see everything on your computer. This setup takes a few 'huh?'s the first time, but once your used to it, it's easy. The files I did it with were quite large, 11 movies were over 1gb, and everything worked fine. This was for a live perfomance in front of 300 people, a little nervewracking. After it was all over, I heard about talaphoto, which seems to do the same thing, except a little easier maybe.

Thanks everyone!

Ottawaman, I took the links to mean I should be using Keynote. The links helped, and I found a few things I hadn't thought of. Plus with that info a bit more playing around I was able to do everything except that zoom in and around thing. If anyone knows how to do that PLEASE let me know.

Quick time eh? What about iDVD? I'm not sure about which projector I will have access to, so if it's not compatible to a mac, I might have to transfer it to a PC and go from there.

Can you tell me your experience with projectors BronzeJolene?

Just about every projector out there is Mac compatible in some way. Most have a VGA input as well as composite (RCA) and S-Video. The Mac you are using to run it will dictate the connection method. All of my Macs (PowerBook, iBook, Mini) came with DVI to VGA adapters. You can get S-Video/composite adapters for iBooks and PowerBooks have S-Video out built-in (newer models might not though). I just used my PowerBook to run some movies at camp last week and not having my DVI to VGA adapter and no S-Video cable meant I had to use the composite in on the projector. Composite is fine for the picture part of things but any text will be hard to read unless it's at a very large font size.

Good luck.

I've done a lot of these and up til just recently I've done it all in Final Cut Pro. I guess I didn't think iPhoto's slideshow would look as good as the ones I do in FCP but I tried it once and was very pleased with how it turned out. It's not quite the same but it saved me a huge amount of time.
iPhoto allows you to tweak each slide. Once you've selected your photos and put them in the slideshow it's very simple. You can change the transition, and modify the start and end points by dragging the photo to where you want and it fills in the rest with the Ken Burns effect. Click on the "Adjustment" icon and you'll be able to change the slide duration. Then the settings icon will be where you can modify the direction of the transition and all that.
Once you have it all done the way you want go to share>send to iDVD. It'll open up iDVD when it's done but you can just quit out of it.
You'll find your video file in your Movie folder and you can take it in to Keynote from there. Then it looks like everyone else covered all the rest for you.
That's the stage where I actually bring it back into Final Cut Pro because I'll put them together in segments in iPhoto since as far as I know it won't let you use more than one song. In that case you may want to forget about Keynote and bring it into iMovie where you can add the titles and music you want with ease. Some of the iMovie themes are an awesome way to really make your project look incredible. Anytime I use them people are just floored and wonder how I did it. I only wish we had more to choose from. Actually I've never used Keynote for this.

After all that is done you can bring it into iDVD, make a nice menu, burn a DVD and plug a DVD player into the projector and feed the audio to some speakers. Then you don't have to worry about bringing your Mac with you.

Sorry if you already knew some of this. I just walked you through it the same way I would walk my mother through it.
Anyway good luck with all of this. I know how much work this is, but thanks to the Mac it's waaaay easier.

iPhoto has a really nice fit slideshow to music feature. Just make a playlist in iTunes that has songs you would like to use - then select that playlist in iPhoto under the media browser. There should be an option there to force the slide lengths to automatcially adjust to fit the music length. Doesn't always work if you need the music to change at a specific point - but very handy for most apps.

Yeah, that's the trouble I usually need to mix it from one song to the next in the middle of the song and the pictures have to coincide as well.
Thanks for the tip though, it may come in handy if I'm doing something like a graduation slideshow etc. where I need some music to just play continuously.

This is why I got Keynote and did the slideshow there. I don't care for the Ken Burns effect, especially when I have to turn it off each time I make a new slideshow.

As far as Projectors they should all work, as long as you remember the right cords. One thing I did that I may not have mentioned was to make a new file in photoshop about the size of the second monitor desktop. Fill it with black, save it and set as the desktop for that screen. Then when the movie/photos arn't playing there isn't a desktop visible. Just a little thing to make everything look smoother.

It's a good idea to go thru a complete run-thru when you get everything ready. The person I was working with insisted on this, and after I got over my annoyance of working another Sunday was glad we did.

Thank you! Thank You! Thank you!

I actually figured it all out, starting in Keynote. Since I had so many references to add, I thought i'd start where I could do most of the work in one program. Besides, with copy and paste along with the easy duplicating of slides, it's all going quite smoothly.

I asked the"comittee" tonight in our meeting, and they preferred having a frame, so the iPhoto slide show, wouldn't do the trick, plus many made comments, without even seeing the zoomy effect (Ken Burn's effect) that they weren't fond of that. So, I'm disolving witth motion with a slick background where the references are typed. And I'll probably export it to iDVD just in case something goes wrong and I do have to use another computer. Unfortunatley, I won't know until the same day.

The music thing has never been an issue, as that was one of the first things I figured out, but we're just going to play a separate cd anyway, so if the slide show stops, there's no repetition of music (the music will start from the beginning regardless of what slide you start with).

Thank you everyone for taking the time to help me today!!!
