Optical Digital Out - Keyboard Volume Control?

So I broke done and bought (for a song) a Xbox 5.1 Surround Sound System:

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/51surroundsound.htm

It's connected to my PM 2.7 with a digital optical cable and I've been loving all the 5.1 goodness (and just having great speakers.)

The one catch is the lack of volume control from the keyboard. The volume up and volume down don't work for the speakers, but mute does. It's really frustrating to adjust the iTunes volume from within the program.

Is there a software solution?

Should I be connecting a different way? The speakers have five audio inputs: Two Fiber optic digital, one coaxial digital, one analog RCA, and one USB 1.1 device port.

As far as I know, using the digital connection means you have to control the volume using the receiver which is processing the surround (the Xbox in this case) ... if you connect using analog, you could then control the volume via the keyboard, however, you then lose the 5.1 surround sound capability (Dolby Digital or DTS).

Well that kinda sucks. Using the digital connection, all my iTunes sounds great. I will rarely watch a movie using this setup. I'm not an expert with audio setups, but I think the 5.1 can only come from a 5.1 source. Since I'll rarely watch movies (just love watching HD trailers all the time,) should I use another connection?

Here are some pictures of the sound system. It's Xbox - Spherex brand, but it's not an Xbox gaming console:
