I'm getting a new external drive for storage purposes and I think I'm going to format it using the mac specific drive type (I'm not sure what it's called). But either way, how do I go about formatting my drive exactly?
You can use the Disk Utility application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. Select your external drive from the list on the left of the Disk Utility window, then click on the Erase tab to reveal the available options for wiping the disk. The rest should be self-explanatory.
There's more detailed instructions in Mac Help. Search for "Erasing a disk or a volume."
Being a new drive, you'll get a pop-up screen after you plug it in telling you that the drive isn't initialised. Just click on "Initialise", it'll take you into Disk Utility. In the Erase area, the default volume format should be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and name it whatever you want. Personally, I always uncheck the "Mac OS 9 Drivers installed" option. Doesn't matter I think.
