Hi, so i have an 12" ibook g3 os x 10.4, all the latest updates, etc. No peripheral software installed. 700mhz, 640mb of ram, I added 512 in october.
I can turn it on, hear a startup chime, but I get no video. Tried resetting PMU, to no avail. Or, it will come on, flicker a lot, then video output is lost.
Long story short, Apple won't fix it for free because the warranty AND expanded logic board repair are expired. Since I dont have an extra 399 USD lying around, I have to fix it myself. ($399? Seriously? Don't mean to blaspheme but I can get a brand new Dell for 100$ more! I could. but won't. Which is why I'm here.)
So it's either the logic board or the cable connecting the computer to the screen is fried. I'm not a savvy person so I'm not sure which situation is more likely. Is there somewhere I can take it within the GTA that will take a look at it for me and tell me what's wrong/give me a quote? Or do I pretty much have to buy a new ibook? Or a new logic board? If so, how much do those things usually cost, new and/or used?
I was hoping one ore more people these forums know about this problem and could help me out.
Thanks!
Can you connect it to an external screen and get video out that way? I don't know too much about the specific problems but if the video-out is working then perhaps that is more indicative of a screen cable problem as opposed to a logic board problem.

Probably not worth having an apple dealer fix it. The cost, it it is the logicboard, would be about the value of the computer itself. I don't think there is any reseller who would look at it for free. Obviously, you have to somehow determine the actual problem and then decide how best to correct it, ie. replace the part or move on to a new computer. As far as cost of a replacement computer, if you figure that a used iBook 1.33GHz (with AC) is available here for $999, replacing yours with a similar unit should be about $600 or so.
Not a lot of help but it's hard to diagnose over the internet.
good luck

I thought about that, and I don't think i can connect to an external monitor. There's two usb outlets and one firewire, and then the rest are for internet so I don't think there's any way for me to connect to a new monitor.
If the logic board would be the cost of the computer itself then I guess i'm out of luck. Someone told me that If it is the logic board then I wouldn't be able to see any video at all, so it might be the cable. Is this true? Also, sometimes i would close the lid (i.e., put it to sleep) and then when I opened it, it would not come back from sleep, i.e. the screen would still be dark. Either that, OR i would close it and it wouldn't go to sleep. I appreciate your quick responses, thank you very much.
The problem is, is that it could be a lot of different things, my guess is that it isn't the logicboard. It is more likely the cable or the video card or the display itself. But guessing doesn't resolve your problem. You have to get hold of someone who can tell you exactly what the problem is and if you don't know someone who can you have to resort to an Apple reseller. Give a couple of them a call and ask what they charge to diagnose this type of problem and how long it would take. Once you know what this will cost you can make an informed decision on how best to proceed. Listening to us here give you solutions to an unknow problem is worth exactly what you pay for it. -)

I would suggest attempting to try the external video option first. I have yet to see a white iBook without an external video port and I have rolled out a good hundred or so in the last year and a half. Here is a side view:
You should have the Video Out Port. The next question would be if you still have the adaptor to connect a VGA monitor to it.
We've had a handful of iBook screens go dead like you've experienced. In most cases the logic boards were replaced. I should mention, iBooks are very messy to work on. It's extremely easy to break something, even seperating the case is not for the faint of heart. If you can pick up a new logic board on eBay for cheap I can provide you with the service manual to disassemble your laptop.
Bring a thread back from the dead, but I have an iBook just like the OP's.
Can't turn it on at all no matter what I do. No fan sounds, nothing on the screen. Is this also probably a logic board issue? Is it still under some kind of special Apple warranty?

If it won't turn on AT ALL, then it's dead. (one might think this statement so obvious it didn't need writing, but apparently not.)
Even if the original cause was something fixable, like the well-documented "bad solder on graphics card" issue the OP to this thread probably suffered, it's long past the time where an economical repair is feasible.
