Hi. I would like to 'Tigerize' my brothers old iMac. It is a 2nd generation 500mhz G3 wih 256 ram. That's as much as I can find out. I'm going to the Dominican Republic to visit him. I'm not sure if it has any version of X on it. I was wondering if there is a firmware update I would have to do before installing X. I tried Apples webside but couldn't find what I was looking for. With such an old computer I am not expecting stellar performance but hoping for iTunes and maybe some movie watching. Would Panther run better on this old computer?

The performance will be fine.
More RAM is useful tho not critical - even and extra 128 will help
The only issue is he may not have a internal DVD required for the Tiger install.
If there is another Mac around you can target mode it into his.

Tiger will run better than Panther.

Firmware is 4.1.9 and if it's the first time for X then it must be up to date.
It's on Versiontracker - in the OS9 section.

That late a model will likely be updated already and if he has Panther on already he is fine.
Have him check in the System Profiler.
