Yikes. Okay when I plug the iPod in, I get a dialog box saying:
"You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To continue with the disk inserted, click Ignore."
And I have the option to Eject, Ignore and Initialize. I've clicked Eject so far.
Neither iTunes nor Senuti is recognizing my iPod! And now when I go through the iPod's library, the About information shows the memory space being used, but my library is empty!
thats really weird, is this the same computer as the one you originally synced with.
try this: restart the ipod (hold center and menu)
then: plug it in and go into itunes prefs and enable disk mode
then: get your "important files" off of it
then: try a program called iPodRip -> works really well for me.

I've switched it to Disk Mode by holding Centre and Play and it still isn't recognized as a OS X readable volume.
