Using both VGA and DVI on AGP G4?

Hi -

I have two 19-inch LCD monitors - expecting to run both from the original video card that came with the G4.
The card has both an AGP and a DVI output, so do the monitors.
So I hooked one monitor to the AGP output of the video card and the other to the DVI output.
Trouble is that the DVI output seems to override the VGA output - only the monitor connected to the DVI output will come on.
If I disconnect the DVI cable, then the monitor connected to VGA works fine.
Switched monitors - same deal - only the "DVI monitor" comes on when both are connectes to the video card.

Is that the way it's supposed to work or is there some way I can get both monitors to work, one on VGA and the other on DVI?
I'm just looking for straight mirroring - nothing fancy.

On Sawtooth G4's (which I assume you have) only one of the ports will work at the same time. I have actually seen cards damaged by plugging 2 monitors in at the same time. Yank 1 right away.

Which video card is it that you have installed?

I have an ATI Radeon® 9000 PRO 64 mb AGP in my Sawtooth that will allow dual monitor support:

http://www.ati.com/products/radeon90...ome/specs.html

I haven't tried it yet, But it says I can on the ATI website.

Have you tried clicking the "Detect displays" button in the Displays system preference pane? I find it odd that they put 2 ports on the card if only 1 can work at a time. If that was their intention, you'd think they would just have a DVI port and include a DVI to VGA adapter.

The Radeon 9000 does have dual monitor support but it also has ADC and DVI ports. He said he has DVI and VGA so I assume he is using the stock 16MB ATI card.

Missed that reply. The reason is becuase it is a DVI-D port. You can't adapt this to VGA.

Yep, Digital Gary is correct the ATI Rage 128 Pro card (man that's an old card) can only support 1 display. The reason for 2 ports on those older cards was to give you the option of VGA or DVI, not both. Dual display cards came later. You'll need to add a PCI video card or get a newer card that supports dual displays.

Are you by chance suggesting my 1999 Mac is an old Mac?

This is how it was described when it first hit the streets.

Power Macintosh G4 (AGP Graphics)
code name: Sawtooth

Overview

"Wicked fast" is the phrase that best summarizes the breakthrough performance of the Power Mac G4 - the first personal computer classified as munitions and under export restriction because of it's power.
