help with os 9.2

A friend asked me to help him with this one but I don't have the answer.
He's using an Imac G3 333 mghz running os 9.2. The computer will boot up but he gets the hourglass and it won't go away. He's rebooted, disconnected the comp from the wall, nothing doing. What's the solution?

Could be a hard drive problem but if he puts the OS 9 CD in the Imac and holds down the C key while booting up he should be able to start up and then he will need to reinstall OS 9.

Holding down the shift key will disable extensions. If it boots, then it's a conflict. Any new programs installed should be disabled using Extension Manager.

If that doesn't help, zapping the PRAM sometimes helps. Hold at start up Cmd-Option-P-R. Allow to chime (start up chime) a couple times.

Running Disk tools from start up disk, as mentioned above is a good start too.

One of my machines is the same configuration, and I would strongly suggest to run Diskwarrior2.1.1 once a month, and the various components of TechTool Pro 3.0.9 once a month. That's pretty well all you need.Norton Utilities would work also, if you don't have TechTool Pro.

That drive is likely on last legs. Make sure he's not got critical info on it.
A small move up to a bit newer iMac would do wonders.
