Mail preferences don't stick

I've been getting double messages in Mail, so I checked my preferences. I normally have the "delete downloaded mail from server" checked and set to right away. When I looked at the preferences, the "delete" box had been unchecked in all my accounts. So I checked the boxes again and reset the option to "right away" (which had also been changed).
It also reactivates accounts I've set not to automatically picking up mail
Everything was okay for a while while Mail was running. but when I quit and then opened it up again, the preferences had gone back to wrong settings and the mail started coming in doubles and triples again. I think that the multiples come from the messages left on the server: Mail just keeps picking up the same ones over again.

The problem is that I can't get my preferences to stick. Everytime I open Mail, it boots up with my preferences changed back .
I thought I'd delete the preferences and start over, but I can't find a plist file.

Meanwhile I am getting really tired of resetting the preferences every time.

Does anyone know what's going on and how to fix it?

The .plist preference file is located in ~/Library/Preferences. It has 'mail' in the file name. Chuck it!

~ = user folder (home folder - the little house).

been there

Lars, I've deleted the plist, rebuilt all my accounts and I'm still getting double messages and the "delete from server" box still won't stay checked.
Any more ideas?
