iPhoto Q? Share photos btwn 2 users on the same iMac
Hi there, here's ze question:
Can I share a library of photos with iPhoto when the main library (family pisctures) resides in user A (my wife)'s image folder and I want user B (me) on the same iMac to access it?
I have tried the Option-start trick (from User B), but it does not let me browse to User A's image folder ("private, no rights to access").
To solve this I'm thinking of moving user A's iPhotos library to the Shared User public folder on the iMac. I think this may circumvent the permission issue. If it is a viable solution I suppose that both users will then have to option-start iPhoto to access the main library of images. Right?
Will this work? Is there another option?
The iMac is a brand new, 2 months old OBSOLETE G5 ( ). We have about 1000 pictures in the library.
Thanks for your help!

Yes, dropping it into the Shared folder should work. All you will need to do is set iPhoto to point to the shared folder as its Library source. You should not need to hold down option when starting iPhoto.

Why do you necessarily want to share the same library?
If you want to view and print etc, then why not just go to iPhoto prefs (in both accounts) and allow sharing and also select look for shared photos.
We do that to share photos between macs and between accounts.

Pelao, that would require that both users must have iPhoto running concurrently. Sharing the same library is a better solution so long as it can be guaranteed that only one user is accessing it at a time.
So I did move the iPhoto library to the Shared folder of the iMac. Now both users on the same iMac can access the full family library. Thx TrevX for confirming.
Pelao, I did try to Share the library from within iPhoto Prefs, but when I switch users on the iMac the shared library does not appear under the second user. It does appear on my networked Tibook however.
Anyway, it works. I'm happy and I continue to love my OBSOLETE G5!

Yes, of course - not at all convenient for everyday use.
Caillou - glad you have a solution. Now, make sure you report back to us when you have disagreements about photo edits, album organization etc

Sure will... in a life time! My wife never plays with the "gadget". She only "works" on it, says she! Meantime, I will edit, reorganize, tag and all as I please, thank you!
BTW, I did the same with the iTunes library. There we may run into some arguments...
