i notice the note on that page:
"Please Note: In order to properly access the full capacity of an ATA interface hard drive or partition larger than 137GB and properly support 48-bit logical block addressing, Windows XP Service Pack 1 or Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 are required. This issue does not affect SCSI hard drives."
(how) does this affect a mac? any reason i should reconsider getting this drive?
thanks for any help...

That will depend on the case but most current cases will have no problem with that drive.
I must admit I prefer Seagates in external for cooling - the WDs do run hot.
You might be best served with a 5 1/4" case with a fan.

I have to concur with MacDoc - Seagates are a little better.
You may want to buy the drive locally - 189+shipping will be rougly equivalent to a local reseller (the drive cost about 140$). Call Brockville or Cornwall or even some smaller shops (Rick's in Ingleside I think)......
i just moved to toronto...anyone know any good places for cheap harddrives around here?

Heat kills hard drives (or really shortens their lifespan). The Vantec is aluminum and in a properly ventilated area it should help. Yes it can work but without a fan, expect less than average reliability and longevity if you leave the unit on for extensive periods of time.
