Unhappy Address Book bug

I have a problem that maybe you can help me with. (I hope this is a common problem with an easy solution) Yesterday, after adding some contacts to address book, my powerbook stalled. I could not even activate the force quit or anything, so I had to hold down the power button for several seconds to force shut down. Upon reboot, I opended the address book program and ALL my contacts were gone. I had hundreds of important contacts that I need. How do I retrieve them. HELP!!
Thanks for any advice!,
Peter

see if there's an addressbook.data.previous file in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook.

compare it with addressbook.data, I would guess the file is now considerably smaller than .previous now. Make a backup copy of .previous, and addressbook.data, delete addressbook.data and rename addressbook.data.previous to addressbook.data, then start Address Book

Oh great! That worked. Thanks harrytse. Just a note to however has the same problem, make sure to change the file located in the 'users' folder and not straight off the 'hd'...i hope that makes sense...AND...make a backup as soon as you got it up. Im making backups every week now.

an excellent suggestion. glad it worked out. as a note, that's what the ~ symbol represents in the path, the user folder.
