HDD power loss on iMac 400
I have had a couple iMacs die on me over the years from the dreaded PAV issue but those have always been about the monitor dying nothing else.
Now I have a iMac 400 that will boot cold and then become unresponsive within 5 minutes (the mouse moves but it has the spinning ball of death), what I don't hear is the HDD. When I use the reset key to reboot the screen comes back on and it's grey, the HDD is silent (no HDD chatter). and it will sit there like that until I turn it off. If I wait 2-3 hours I can repeat the cycle. I should point out that I tried powering the HDD from an external power source to track down the problem with no success (same problem).
Anybody have experience in what part is causing the issue here? I have plenty of experience with the monitor issue none with this so a little help would be nice.
