How to upgrade my 12" ibook?

Allo, ehMac ppl!
I'm a novice mac user and am in need of some advice on upgrading my mac.
I have a 12" ibook/ 500Mhz/ 128SD/ 10G/ CD-RW with an additional 256MB, i purchased it 4 years ago and needless to say it has become unbearably sloooooow. what can i do to upgrade it... or is it best to buy a new mac all together?
oh, by the way i'm STILL running OS 9.2.2!
any advice would be greatly appreciated!

That iBook should still run 9 well. If you were on X I'd understand. May be time for a re-install. That said, you could upgrade the HDD and max out the Ram. Get as fast an HDD as posssible, it makes a huge difference over the stock drive.

HDD replacement instruction can be found at http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/50.0.0.html.

The re-install of OS9.* will return performance to as-new if you 'clean' the drive. I have a number of iBook of the toilet seat vintage running various levels of OSX amongst my clients. The biggest issue is the screen resolution - 600x800 just doesn't look right these days and a lot of websites are configured 'larger'.

The rule - the most memory that will fit and the fastest (nothing less that 7200rpm ) biggest (capacitywise) harddrive - works for all computers to improve performance. This could be done to your iBook for a couple hundred bucks - substantially less than buying something new, and Tiger does run quite usably on a 366 iBook

If it's really slow the drive could be failing - see my post about it.
384 should run 9 very nicely and Tiger decently.

Hi,

I finally got Panther (10.3) on the 366mhz iBook and it runs well. I really noticed a speed bump jumping from OS 9 to 10.2, but not much improvement to 10.3. It seems more stable though.

In snowcone's case I'm guessing that the HD is the problem and needs to be replaced.

I have a G3 500MHz iBook next to my drum kit where my band practices, I added a 512MB module for a total of 640MB, removed the stock HD and replaced it with a 60GB if I recall (could be a 40GB) and added an AirPort card. It runs Tiger rather well!

Sell it and buy a used faster one, esp. if you plan on running X...upgrading the drive and/or ram will only help marginally-better to upgrade them, if necessary, in a machine with a faster processor and better graphics chip.
