Linksys Wireless Network Mode modifies signal strength of airport card!

when I am in my router's settings at 192.168.1.1, under wireless it has settings for Wireless Network Mode. my main computer in the basement is attached the wireless linksys router, and the computer with the problem is upstairs. So for Wireless Network Mode there are four options: Wireless-B Only, Wireless-G Only, Mixed, or Disable. (Disable meaning do not let any computers connect to the network wirelessly). So this problem is affecting the computer upstairs. So I open Internet Connect on the upstairs computer and i look at the boxes next to signal. I then go back to the linksys internet setup Wireless Network Mode page. If I select the Mixed option on this page, then on internet connect 4 blue boxes are greyed out. Same thing with Wireless-G Only. but with Wireless-B Only non of the boxes are greyed out. I also had "Use Interference Robustness" checked under airport settings at all times. Also, after I changed to Wireless-B Only and saw that there were no grayed out boxes, I unchecked Use Interence Robustness and there are still no greyed out boxes. How come I can't Wireless-G Only or Mixed without the internet connection being slow and how do I make the boxes not grey out!

What kind of card does the machine upstairs have, Airport or Airport Extreme?

Because Wireless B although slower is a better signal than "G"

Whan you turn on G or turn on Mixed, the network goes to the lowest common denominator.
