Shuffle Woes

Hello to all,

I recently purchased a shuffle for my brother. I think he unplugged it from the computer without ejecting (bad, I know) and now I can't get the Mac to "see" the shuffle at all.

I am running 10.4.3 on a cube 450 plugging the shuffle into a USB port on the 15" LDC monitor. I have updated the iPod Updater software to version 4.5, which I believe is the most recent software. I am running iTune 5.0.1 (4) if that helps.

I've followed instructions for resetting, for ensuring battery is charged, etc. but to no avail. Funny thing is I notice from the system profile that the shuffle does show up on the USB port and I can even get the serial number for the shuffle, but nothing is coming up when i run the ipod updater software and it does not show up on the desktop. Any ideas would be appreciated at this point as I am tempted to return the unit to Best Buy and let them deal with it.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Get a newer version of iTunes! Plug the Shuffle into a different port!

yea my shuffle does that all the time, try plugging it into a port on the machine itself. so i get's full power. and stuff... restart do all that. i've unplugged this before without ejecting and nothing happens...

Mine did that recently. I was using it to transfer files from my Mac to my PC Media Center, and Windows crashed during the file transfer. Same symptoms as described. Mine was dead. Tried resetting... nothing. Tried updating, but couldn't as it never got detected. Tried all ports on my Mac AND PC... still no go.

Had to send it to Apple and get a replacement.

In general unplugging what is a HD during a 'forbidden' moment will corrupt the part of the machine that is viewed as a HD. For example unplugging a camera during picture transfer may leave the camera as useless as a 'card reader' but useful as a camera working well with iPhoto.

It is pretty much the same thing with a shuffle: you have corrupted the HD structure and it needs to be reformatted. I would try the following things (some you will have tried yourself no doubt)

- Switch off (that is the reset on a Shuffle), switch on again
- Let the battery run down (remember to plug headphones)
- Create a new account on your mac, launch the latest version of itunes, the machine should see the shuffle and ask you if you want to change the preferred account. Say yes, use this account to clean up any stray files (play with the HD options until all unwanted files are removed) then revert to your normal account and repeat the process

In all cases use a powered connection (ie no keyboard)
