Is it just me or do computers like to create problems just for the fun of it?
I have a 250GB FireWire LaCie drive that's been working fairly well. I purchased it early this year.
It is split into two partitions. a 180gb and a 50gb one. this is so that the 50gb can store files large than 4gb. i use this harddrive on both a powerbook g4 and on a pc, and this was the only way to get what i needed.
anyway, this morning, when i connected the harddisk to the powerbook...the 180gb partition just reads as blank. it's just...blank, nothing on it. the 50gb is fine and all the information is there, the 180gb is not.
I called LaCie, but they weren't any help at all. basically said they don't cover this with warranty and that i should try to recover the data.
now i've run into recovery issues before, with a maxtor drive, and the costs are ridiculous. i can't really afford to give the drive to some firm to bring the information back.
i haven't written anything TO the partition since the data is still there...somewhere.
how do i go about fixing this? roughly 180gb of data is quite a lot and you can bet that it's important.
has anybody else had this problem? i've been reading up and it seems im not the only one, but i haven't been able to find a solution.
It's likely the data is still there, but the volume or catalog information is damaged. The two applications that you should invest in right about now are: DiskWarrior from Alsoft -- this rebuilds damaged catalogs. DataRescue from ProSoft -- this scans for and recovers files from a volume that can't be resurrected (make sure you have adequate free space on another drive to recover to).
I've had the partitions on my lacie external drive disappear twice.... both times diskwarrior brought it back with data 100% intact.

Nope, in both cases i just ran disk warrior, it said i had a corrupt b-tree or something, and it fixed it in 2 mins, then everything was fixed.
Be wary of what you do with the drive until you get it fixed.... the more you use it, the more chances you have to inadvertently damage the data that is there.
If you use it on PC as well it's probably not HFS .. don't think diskwarrior will be of much help in this case. Is it formatted FAT32? I don't know any OSX tools offhand that repair fat32 ... but if it is you might be able to repair it on your PC.
will disk warrior not work? i mainly run it on my powerbook, but my pc is right next to me.
all i did was try the repair in disk utility on panther. nothing else. i'm not gonna do anything to the drive until a sound and probable solution is available.
why don't u try it anf find out instead of asking people. and yes i think it will considering that apples disk utitlity program can create a FAT32 tree for data anyway.

it says that disk warrior can only repair hfs drives so yeah, it wont be much help.
i DO have a PC...what other utilities are there to repair fat32 partitions?
