I'm starting to like Tiger more and more.....
However, first snag I have run into is trying to change the city in the weather widget.
I tried putting both Toronto and Belleville in, but the widget picks up US cities with that name. Adding ON or Ontario doesn't help either.
The accuweathersite the widget links to does have Belleville weather and I made that my primary site, but I still can't get the widget to display it.
The help menu says to just type the city name into the widget field, but that does not work.
Any hints?
You know, this widget works really weird.
When I type in Toronto, Canada(ON) and hit the 'Done' button on the bottom right, nothing happens. The old city name that's in the widget stays.
If I type in Toronto, Canada(ON) and hit the return key on the keyboard, I get 'no city found'.
If I only type in Toronto and hit the return key a bunch of cities show up in a drop down menu, Toronto, Canada(ON) being one of them. When I then scroll down to select it and then hit 'done' the city finally changes correctly.
I assume that inconsistent behaviour is not just on my version of Tiger - the software designers have a bit of clean up to do here.
What also does not work correctly is bringing up the detailed weather website of the city. If you have a US city in the widget and you click on the city name, then the detailed weather website for that city comes up - on the Canadian cities you only get a general page from the website and you have to drill down to the specific city yourself. Making the Canadian city your default doesn't make any difference either.
I've had no problem with any town I've tried, formatting it like:
Town, Province
Other formats seem to work erratically.
A simple drop-down list would definitely be a good usability improvement.
This widget seems to be flakey.
I tried adding both 'Ontario' and 'ON' after the city name with no luck.
And there is a drop-down menu, but it only comes up after you type in a city name and hit the return key on the keyboard. Also not exactly standard practice.
I have noticed that it sometimes ignores your changes, despite claiming to accept them. It hasn't happened to me in a while, but the change always ended up taking effect eventually (after restart, perhaps? I can't remember.) Definitely a bit flaky, but it hasn't messed up for me in several months.
FWIW, the name has to validate meaning you have to press return. It will correct the city if necessary (eg. from Calgary, AB to Calgary, Canada(AB)) and then when you press done it works. It's wonky and not obviously not very intuitive.
Are all the widgets that 'wonky'?
It would have helped substantially if the description in the help menu was a bit more specific. All they tell you is the obvious - really poor documentation especially for something that is a bit quirky.
