I can longer access my PowerMac 8100/80 which I use to share files with my PowerMac G4s running Tiger. I get error messages stating that the server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocol. How do I get around this?
System software on the 8100/80: System 8.1
System Software on the G4s: OS 10.4

System 8.1 using an Appletalk protocol that is imcompatible with OS X since (I think) 10.1. You need to upgrade to OS 9 which will allow you to use Appletalk over TCP/IP which is what OS X uses.

I thing it was actually compatible until Tiger. The reason 9.x will work (as long as you turn on appletalk over IP in the appletalk control panel), is because it includes Shareway IP personal.
If you can't upgrade to 9.x for some reason, you can buy a licence to Shareway IP separately, and run it under 8.1.

No, it definitely was not compatible until Tiger. It was early on in Mac OS X and there was a big stink made about it all those years ago.
Anyway, yes he'll need Shareway IP or upgrade to OS 9 and be done with it.

I think Appleshare IP server would work too (but it's overkill) -- but i think it might need 8.6 or better ... worth mentioning though in case you know someone that has an old copy they don't use any longer ... I imagine there are quite a few copies of that kicking around these days.
