I was compiling a bunch of videos with iDVD and had to convert some of them to .mov and did so with ffmpegx. Some of the files were Windows Media files (.wmv) and after converting them to .mov, iDVD wouldn't let me add them saying they were unrecognizable. How can I make them work?

iDVD only works with DV files. When you export them with ffmpegX be sure to choose DV as the output file type. The files are going to be HUGE, but that's what needs to be done.

When I convert to DV, ffmpegx says it's done almost instantly and then when I go to play the converted items I get an error? Does it not matter that they're Windows, .wmv or .asf, files? I was converting everything to .mov before, mostly .avi files, and it was working fine.

Hmm, sounds like it wont do a conversion from .WMV or .ASF to .DV. Convert it to .MOVs first and then convert those to DV. You can use Quicktime for that instead of ffmpegX if you want.

So I tried converting them to .mov as well as a number of different formats and I keep getting the same results. It says it's done instantly, then the files are unrecognisable. Unfortunatley I don't have Quick Time Pro, any other options?
iDVD can use any quicktime compatible file formats (not just DV) IIRC. It sounds like ffmpegx might just be putting a wrapper around the content for the .mov stuff and it's not something that quicktime natively supports (wmv).
If you can try transcoding it into a different format that quicktime can deal with, not sure how to do this offhand in ffmpegX but I'm sure it's possible.
You can try and transcode with VLC (choose advanced options for output and select file type and where you want to save it to). http://videolan.org
