Does anyone know of a kitchen planner I can download for free. There are loads online that require Windows, but I can't find Mac versions. Would really appreciate anyones help here.

The Mac is very deficient in this kind of software, unfortunately. I looked in vain for an OS X solution for a friend who is a landscape gardener. There are ultra-expensive apps, and ancient OS 7 apps, but no nice low-cost OS X ones that I could find. As you say, there are lots for Windows.
By the way, when it comes to software this complex, anything you can get for free should be viewed with suspicion, especially on Windows. "Free" software that looks too good to be true usually installs scumware of some sort.

I cannot offer any solutions, but I can commiserate. I've been looking for similar software myself. Ikea has one that is free, but it is only for Windows at this point...hopefully a Mac one is in the works.
There's Sketchup it has an 8 hour demo use (actual drawing time, you can even leave the app open and it won't use up time). It also has some extra components to download for furniture, cabinets, landscape etc.
I use it all the time for designing stuff.
I was going to use the Ikea kitchen planner, but as you said, it only works for windows. What bugs me is that the kitchen brochure talking about their 3D app has it running on an old iMac. What's with that, Ikea? Mac's are good enough for your flashy ads but not for real life use?

Of course, it's the Mac aesthetic...it meshes well with the whole Ikea thing. Plus designers typically use Macs.
I am looking for a way to use Ikea Kitchen Planner too - it doesn't work on crossover and I'm not too keen on having to install a windows OS - that's why I bought a mac!
For kitchen plans you might like Sweet Home 3D - the site has a library of additional furniture you can import.
Ikea Kitchen Planner isn't that great, even on Windows hardware. You're not missing much. You can, if you want to torture yourself, use javascript based layout stuff hosted on the Ikea Canada website, from your Mac (or Windows ... it's no better on a Windows browser). Haven't checked lately, regarding Kitchen planning, but they had stuff for a lot of Ikea furniture working (sort of) the last time I checked.
