PowerBook and LaCie HD performance

Wondering if anyone has experience with, or knows what the best way to get the most performance out of this setup is.

• 12'' Powerbook 1.33GHz, 60GB Drive, 768MB RAM
• LaCie 250Gb Firewire Hard Drive

I'm guessing that since the LaCie is a much faster drive then the internal powerbook drives, booting from and working off of only this drive would yield the best performance. However this would be a pain when taking the powerbook on the road since then I would have to have another boot volume on the PB's internal drive. So what I'm looking to do is leave the system as is on the internal drive so I only have to worry about one system, and put all working files on the LaCie. Would putting the heavy working applications on the LaCie see any performance increase as well ?

The working apps being mainly Adobe CS stuff. I Would leave the small stuff like safari, mail, Adium on the internal boot drive.

If it's a Firewire 400 set up the difference is negligible.
Add more RAM instead.
