Red face Need help - hooking up a new eMac to a Microsoft router!

Hi,
This board was recommended highly to me by a member of the "thecomputermechanics.com" board.

My fiancée went and bought a new eMac and a Wireless Airport Extreme card.
I successfully installed the Airport Extreme card BUT
I CANNOT CONNECT to the Microsoft Wireless "G" router.
(Model MN700 Wireless-G Base Station).

On the eMac I can see the little Airport symbol at the top right hand side of the screen. Next to the Airport symbol is the "speaker symbol", the date/clock and the "spotlight" symbol.

I am NOT a mac expert. The last time I owned a mac was a few years ago and it was a Mac Plus (a computer liked but no longer own).

When I click on the Airport symbol on the eMac I see a "pop-up" showing:

Airport ON (DIMMED) which I assume means Airport card is working.
Airport OFF (not Dimmed) I didn't select this because I want Airport to work.
MSHOME (with a checkmark next to it) - this is the name of my wireless G router.
"Other..." I haven't touched this yet.
"Create Network" I haven't touched this yet.
"Use interference Robustness"
"Open Internet Connect"

On my Wireless G router I have turned OFF the encryption (128 bit, 64 bit, etc. they are all OFF) to make sure this won't cause problems for the eMac connecting to the router.
Also on the router I have turned OFF "MAC filtering" to make sure this will not stop the eMac from from connecting to the router.

PROBLEM:
1) Can an eMac equipped with an Airport Extreme card connect to a Microsoft Wireless "G" router?
2) What am I doing wrong?

I would appreciate any help that the members on this board can provide.
Thanks in advance to all for your responses.

HELP!!!!!

MS routers work just fine. I myself have the same router.

First I would update the router with the latest firmware which should be 02.01.02.0590. BUT you can only do so from a Windows OS.

From the System Prefrences, goto Network and check to see if you have an IP address. Without WEP/WPA or MAC Filtering you should at least have an IP address.

Try setting up the router with the emac attached via ethernet.

Have you set your wireless router to connect to the internet ?

Anyway, break out the manual. Get the "wired" part of the router working properly. Then, and only then, concentrate on the wireless end of things.

When you are happy with things you will want to use WPA encryption on both the router and the EMac for best security. I believe it is part of the "g" standard.

Also... how do I set the channel on the Airport Extreme card?

Currently, my wireless MS Router is set to channel 6.
I would like to set the Airport Extreme card to the same channel 6.

How do I do this? Where do I go on the eMac & Airport Extreme card to set it to channel 6?

Thank again to all for your replies.

P.S.
I have not yet tried to update the Microsoft Wireless router.

Problem:
I went and clicked once on the Network Icon in the System Preferences.

A Popup appeared showing:
"Show: Network Status" (drop down box)
Below this shows:
Airport with a YELLOW DOT to the right of it.
On the right-hand side of this says:
"Airport is connect to MSHOME (which is my Microsoft router).
Airport does NOT HAVE AN IP ADDRESS and cannot connect to the internet"

OK... How do I the airport to connect to the router and obtain an ip address?

Thanks in advance to all for your replies.

I still NEED HELP here.

Can you connect to the router via ethernet? Just want to make sure that the internal DHCP server is active so that you get an IP.

Smile OK - problem fixed! :)

Hi,

I could NOT GET AN IP ADDRESS

Problem solved!!!!

First...
  • I found out what the ip address is of the Airport Extreme wireless card in the eMac.

  • I logged into the router and added the eMac's ip address into the MAC address allow list.

  • I went to the eMac.
    Apple menu

  • System Preferences

  • Select "Airport" icon by clicking on it once

  • Click on the "configure" button

  • Click on "MSHOME" which is the name of my wireless router

  • Select "TCP/IP" tab which is next to the "Airport" tab

  • On the Dropdown box for "Configure IPv4:"
I selected "Using DHCP with Manual Address"

  • I entered the IP address from when I "added the eMac's ip address into the MAC address allow list."

  • Left the subnet mask to default of 255.255.255.0

  • Press the "APPLY NOW" button

AND YAHOO!!! eMac is NOW connected to the net thru a Microsoft router.
