Plextor ConvertX Import Problems

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to import some video from a VCR with my ConvertX PVR and I'm contiunally getting the flicker where the picture darkens almost imperceptably every second or two then relightens.

I thought it may have something to do with the older copying prevention they used to put on video recorders. I know they used to deliberately de-tune the VCR's to the point where a signal from another VCR would drop out slightly, thereby causing the light and dark effect so you couldn't just copy your bought Videos. As an old fart and long time movie buff however I've seen this (althought a long time ago) and it doesn't seem quite as consistent with the ConvertX as I remember it on the VCR.

As some extra info I'm only trying to copy a show I taped off the TV so it's not even like it's some type of new copy protected VCR that I didn't know of.

Any ideas or assistance you may be able to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Bruce

P.S. For those who would suggest it I already PM'd CarbonKen last night coz I know he has one of these but I guess he has the weekend off or something. Thanx anyways.

Does it only happen with the 1 tape? Does it work fine with other tapes or recording TV?

Hey Gary,

Recording TV is fine, I haven't had a chance to try another tape yet. I'll give it a go this afternoon and get back to you (I disconnected it in disgust last night around 1am).

Thanks for the idea.

Hey Gary (or anyone else with ideas),

I just tried another video with close to the same results. Every video I have here has been taped on this VCR so I'm going to try to get my hands on another video from someone else to try. I also thought about a head cleaner because I got the impression you hadn't heard of this happening before with the ConvertX so it may just be the source VCR. To be honest that is the most important thing to me, if the VCR is causing the problem I can deal but if I just spent over $300 on something that can't import from a VCR without flickering light and dark I'll be really pissed.

If you have any other ideas I'd be grateful but I'll also post my results with another video in case anyone has the same problem in the future.

I haven't used the ConvertX before but I've used the Elgato EyeTV USB, EyeTV Wonder and the EyeTV 200. All use the same software and I didn't have these problems. What version are you using? Have you updated to the most current version? Also, what computer and OS are you using?

Since it works recording TV fine, I would be pointing the finger at your VCR. If you have a Camcorder (or if you can get another VCR) you could try importing off that.

Maybe Ken or anyone else that has experience with the ConvertX will have some ideas.

Hey Gary,

Yep, I updated to EyeTV 1.8 (the latest) and I'm using it on a G4 1.5GHz PB so I'm fairly sure it's the VCR to blame.

I'm getting some tapes from a friend tomorrow so I'll post back when I know.
