Cant install OS X on G3 Blue and white

Hi
Im trying to install OSx on a Blue and white G3 powermac with a 20 GB hard disk and 384MB ram
The Jag disk I have from my Powwermac G4 MDD 1.25 GH
and it goes through the install then upon restart it hangs on a grey screen with the mouse frozen just before the welcome to osx screen.
I did the firmware upgrade. and reset pram anything else.

Thanks very much

Pull one or other of the RAM sticks then try.

Do you have a Zip installed??

NO Zip, but it does have some odd network card with lots of ports.
This machine works perfect in 8.6 or 9.2
Will try without the network card

Have you tried "verbose mode" to boot up with

Instead of the grey apple on the white background you can actually get a "play by play description of the boot process". This can be helpful in diagnosing what is wrong when you boot up.

Keep Cmd-s pressed down at bootup until you see text appearing on the screen.

Good Luck - Terry

Thanks Terry
I will try that and report back
By the way I tried putting 10.3.9 on a 20gb drive in my G4, and it would boot my G4, then putting it in the G3 Blue, but it would go into a commandline single user mode. I tried fsck and it said it was ok, restarting just repeated the same.

I always thought the "first 8 gigs" limitation (where OS X must be on the first 8 gigs of the drive) applied to beige G3 boxes (and Wallstreet powerbooks), but there's also a vague memory that it also applies to Rev A B&W models. So, try reformatting with two partitions: one 7 gigs, the other with the remainder, then install your OS on the 7-gig volume.

If it's a REV A then it could be a bunch of things including the ide controller which has known corruption problems.

No harm in trying the 8 gig partition trick.

You could try plugging into the CD port as well.
