I have noticed that in the last year that MS word seems to take a lot longer to fully fire up. I get that spinning wheel for what seems an extra long time. Maybe it has to do with my switch to Tiger?
It works fine but just seems to take longer than it did before to fire up.
Anyone else have this little annoyance? Or is it just normal being a microshaft program?

Right after I upgraded to Tiger, Word (v.X) seemed to take a while to load up after a machine restart. It seemed to get stuck on optimizing system fonts or some such thing. But recently it's been firing up as quickly as it ever did. No idea what the problem was (or what your problem is) however.

I saw the same thing doing font optimizations, the first time it tried to do that it hung up on me for 15 minutes, I force quit, the next time I launched it ran the optimizations again, and since then it's been ok here.
I would run FontBook, and then run Font diagnostics from the File menu (make sure to select all fonts). Delete any fonts for which problems are detected. Make sure to optimize your system, repair permissions, etc.
There was a fix in 10.3.9 for slow OS startups when a lot of PostScript fonts are present. It seems to have fixed slow Word 2004 starting too on a couple of G4s I worked on.
