I want to install Tiger onto a G4 PowerMac which has no DVD-rom.
I have a powerBook which can be used to mount the Tiger install DVD and select the target disk.
I know its possible to use firewire target disk mode to install onto the remote computer.
Is there a "network" version, i.e. if I use a network cable rather than firewire to install onto the remote computer?
Script Kiddie - You can kind of do this, in that it is possible to have your computer start up off a NetBoot image that is stored on a computer running Mac OS X Server. By having a NetBoot image, you can then image hard drives but I don't know if this is even feasible in your circumstances.
Why not just create a disc image (of the Tiger DVD), transfer that to you G4 via target disc mode, disconnect the PB, mount the image and then just run the install off that?
The only thing I would suggest is to make sure that you lock the image once it is created, sometimes the act of mounting it can alter it such that a s/w installer will not work.
This way you do not have to deal with possible hangs related to your network config resulting in a fubar'd OS install and all teh headaches that go along with it.
What I ended up doing was finding a spare DVD rom from a PC, opening up the G4 case, plugging it in and installing with the case open and the DVD rom haning out in the wind.
