Alternative to StuffIt Expander

Hallo everyone,

I've been lurking around a bit for the last while, just checking things out. It seems there is a really nice Canadian Mac community here and I'm glad to become a member as well.

For those of you that have done a clean install of Tiger, you may have noticed that there is an application missing that was included with the previous versions of OS X - StuffIt Expander. I am quite aware that I can download it from the StuffIt site, however, I say good riddance. Expander was half-decent, but I am not willing to deal with junk from StuffIt by having to install their "demo" version just so I can get the free expander. That's just dumb.

So, I was wondering if anyone out there had found an alternative for unarchiving .sit and .sitx files. Luckily a lot of people have been moving to more open standards when it comes to downloading things, but once and awhile I still run into .sit and such. I spent a bit of time looking around and couldn't really find much, I'm hoping someone here might be able to point me towards some sort of an alternative, or at least a version that wasn't bundled with their trial version.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

[Edit: Ugh, remind me to turn off "Auto-complete" in Safari. My alias is my email address, and one I no longer use at that. If possible, could a moderator or administrator change my account name to simply "feilkin" or delete this account? Thanks.]

Hello and welcome. I don't have Tiger yet, will hopefully be getting it tomorrow, but have read many threads like yours saying that StuffIt Expander is no longer included with Tiger. Here is a direct link actually to downloading StuffIt, if you still want, via another mac community website. If you no longer want to go to with StuffIt, I have also provided two links which provide other decompressing file software for the mac. Again thanks to MacRumors for these links.

Hope this helps and enjoy.

Thank you muchly grafico. While I was hoping to find an "all in one" alternative to Stuffit, I guess I will have to wait for someone to come up with a free alternative. For now, I'm just going to continue using StuffIt. Glad I could download it direct + delete the non-"free" parts of the standard demo.

Thanks for providing those links, they were helpful.
