Safe to restore backup of G4 onto G5??

This may have been addressed in the past but the search function didn't pull up any matches for me...

Is it safe to copy a G4 backup onto a G5? I am worried about the fan controls ect...

Thanks

One of those "maybes" - won't hurt and you likely can update the G5 if you have a problem.
OR use the Apple Import FROM the G5.

I've done it. I did have some issues at first but turns out that it was due to positioning of ram. My advice is to clone your G4 system to your G5 using Carbon Copy Cloner, Then to be safe do an archive and install wich will give you a fresh OS but preserve all your settings and programs.

Thanks MacDoc. I went ahead with it. So far so good. I will keep an eye on things and if I see anything weird I'll just format and start over. I just don't have the time to rebuild this thing right now. Looking for any shortcut I can.

Can you think of anything specific I should watch for?

Thanks again. Now I just need something that will make them spin up. So far it has been very quiet--

Andreww, thanks for the input. I did use CCC and it appears to have worked flawlessly as usual. Now I just need to make sure I have no side effects.

No - if they are quiet the transfer worked - they won't come up.

Well as an update...

The process was not as successful as I had hoped. The OS would kernel panic after it woke from sleep. This would occur after the machine had been sleeping for prolonged periods in excess of 30 mins.

I then decided to use the recovery DVDs. Did a erase and restore and then used the "setup assistant" to transfer my data to the G5 from my firewire backup drive.

Since I have used the restore DVD's and the "setup assistant" it has not crashed once. Since this essentially achieves the same goal I would recommend using this approach when moving from G4 to G5.

Hope this helps someone else in this dilemma.
