al powerbook trouble reading disc

My dad sometimes gets discs from employers that his al powerbook g4 15inch 1ghz cannot read. These discs just contain documents and pdfs etc. When he sticks into the PC (pioneer a05 optical drive) it reads it fine. Is there anyway my dad can use the disc without having to go to the desktop first? I've been trying to get my dad to switch to a mac mini, if i can get this problem fixed he will probably buy a mac mini.
