I have several iMacs and I would like to install OSX on a couple. I have the Discs however they are DVDs and none of the iMacs are DVs.I do have an external HD
(250G),will that work? What are the options? The iMacs are up to Specs. for OSX.
This is for a classroom with some eMacs so that we can have more machines for iMovie etc.
Thanks

Go back to the place where you bought the *individual* discs for *each* machine and ask them to replace the ones *that you bought legally* with the CD version.....
Or, talk to your education rep and see if they can help.
(I know, I know......don't bother to tell me what he's going to say.... )

I don't think they did legally purchase the disks. Apple doesn't sell OS X on DVD. I believe they are trying to take a DVD that came with another Mac and use it to install on the iMacs that didn't come with OS X.
Legally, you aren't allowed to do that. If you buy a retail copy of OS X, it will come on cd's.
If your iMac has firewire, you could put it in Target disk mode to the eMac and pick the iMac hard drive to install on. This would get you up and running but again, legally, you should buy a copy of OS X per computer.
And like brock said..... Make sure your firmware is up to date before you install it. If not, you'll be sorry
Just to set the record straight I have 25 OSx discs (DVDs) that came with our eMacs.
Right. So they are for your eMacs. Legally, you should buy a retail copy of OS X for each iMac you are trying to install on. If you do, it will be on CD's. Illegally, see the last part of my last post.
Let he who has never sinned cast the first stone!
Can't you give the guy a break, he has 25 copies and it's for classroom use!
By the way for you in the biz that's more students "ie customers" for Apple.
Just trying to provide all the information. Organizations against software piracy aren't going to care if they have 25 legal copies or how many potential cusomters the priated software might bring to Apple in the long run. They are going to care about the illegally installed software.
What you do with your personal computer is your business. What you install on computers in a school is the school boards business. Any schools I have dealt with generally aren't too crazy about using pirated software.
I would have been disappointed if I didn't get a response.
I don't think that 25 bought and paid for copies of software was considered
pirated but what do I know.

Great illustration of a common error or misconception - that you can do anything you like with "legal" software, for example install a single copy on multiple machines.
This is a form of software piracy, unfortunately.
Legally, each copy of OS X is tied to one particular Mac, except where you've bought a "family" license or some other form of multi-copy license. Apple doesn't enforce this with serial numbers or CD keys like Microsoft does. They rely on our honesty. I think that it's especially important for software licenses to be honoured in schools. What kind of lesson are we teaching the kids when their teachers and administrators are flouting software licenses? Should we then be surprised if the youngsters see nothing wrong with file sharing and other illegal and dishonest practices?
