okay, so my dad used a busted hd as an excuse to replace his b&w with a mac mini. so then i had a b&w with no hd, so i pulled the hd out of my 6500 and put it in the b&w. the drive is 4 gigs, and formatted clean, but when i try to install jaguar, it fails really early and tells me to try again later.
diagnoses? solutions?

4 GB isn't enough to install Jaguar. The original HDD in the B&W was 6 GB, and even that would be a bit tight, but it should install OK. I have a 6 GB drive that was originally installed in a B&W, if you're interested.

the installer says jag only needs 2 gigs. why wouldn't 4 be enough? and even so, it doesn't run the installer anywhere near long enough to fill 4 gigs. it only goes for a few seconds.

Was the drive formatted in OS9? If so, was it formatted in regular HFS or HFS+? I think that OSX won't install on a regular HFS formatted drive. You should be able to check this in System Profiler.
This is moot if you formatted using the OSX installer CD.

There's also a potential problem with the hard drive coming from a 6500 - you can't really say "ATA is ATA" - there are older and newer versions of the standard.
Is the firmware up to date?

Why not just save yourself the hassle and buy a cheap new HD?

wow, look at all the questions. i appreciate the attention.
it is formatted in mac os extended, as per request by the x installer. no problem there.
i had thought the hd might not be compatible, and i'm certainly no expert, but it plugged in perfectly normally, and the installer recognizes it and allows me to start installing, so i'm inclined to believe that's not a problem.
firmware is also something i'm considering. i'm really not sure about that one. it is up to date according to my os 9.2.1 cd (from 1999 i think), but i don't know if more has changed since then, and i'm not sure how to check.
by the way, the b&w doesn't currently have an internet connection, and while i could certainly get one for it, it would be a bit of a hassle, and worth avoiding if possible.
the reason i don't just buy a cheap hd is that i'm not really doing anything with this computer right now. i'm just kinda goofing around on spring break. it's not worth any money to me to get it going right now. i'm just having fun playing with my macs.

I have a B&W running Panther so I'd think Jag would work just fine too. Like the others have suggested, I'd try with another HD and see if that solves it. Or, just guessing here, but maybe there's something else in there that isn't compatible with OS X? A PCI card, or something? Or maybe there isn't enough RAM? How much memory is in the B&W?
