Low Xbench scores on a new G5 - something wrong

Hey all,

Basically my new G5 is a month old but its been crashing almost every day since I got it. I finally did an xbench score and its baaaaaaaad. Is it possible there's something wrong with the cpu?!

Nothing else was running at the time and it was off a fresh restart. I've done the test again a few times and the results are nearly identical.

G5 1.8 single 600mhz bus
1280 MB ram

In the xBench thread, Macaholic mentioned something about G5's CPU control in system prefs -- ??? I don't know, if it's turn-upable, maybe it's turned down...

Good thing it's newish.

Have a look inside, maybe there's an iBook duct taped where the G5 guts used to be...

Hey, in Activity monitor, there is a drop-down box with the default at "My processes" -- Change it to "All Processes" and see if anything is spinning out of control... Just an idea....

[edit]: Actually if your Total is low, there ain't much point...

I just know that once a bad .jpg on my desktop was maxing out my CPU -- trying to calculate it's size over and over and over.

Your processor is almost certainly set to reduced inthe Energy Saver control panel.

Here's my 1.8 single. It's your CPU that's lagging. My drive and video are a bit faster ( Raptors and 9600xt 128 ) but your CPU is at half speed.

hey thanks for all the replies!

actually I checked and it was set to automatic. when I redid the test on high setting i got a score of about 179.

but my question is, if it was set to automatic, shouldn't it have... automatically gone to high?

You would think but you got the same speed as I when mine was accidentally on reduced so go figure. Should be a snappier G5 now.

Interesting; by that test my upgraded Cube is pretty good; at 127 with a 1.3 ghz processor upgrade but only a 100 mhz bus, a high-falutin' G5 is only 40% better.

- Save the world and buy a Cube!

It doesn't seem that we've resolved the "crashing every day" problem. That seems to be the most worrisome aspect, no?

Yep... apple's helping me out with that one, but they said i have to do a lot of troubleshooting. no time for that until classes end at the beginning of april.
