Superdrive issues...help

Okay, I'll explain what I'm experiencing and maybe someone can help.

On my main account (work) I am no longer able to burn a cd or dvd. I've got a g4 ibook with the 4x dvd Superdrive.

I slide a blank CD or DVD in and the drive doesn't register it at all. Doesn't show up on the desktop, doesn't ask me what I would like to label the disk as. Nothing. After a bit it spits it out and says it can read the media.

Now, on my second account on the computer (family) thinks work almost perfect. The drive recognizes a CD or DVD and so forth. Shows up on the desktop. However, the burn speed has decreased. Instead of the max of the DVD burner being 4x it is now 2x.

What did I do to screw this up? lol

Is my best bet to reformat the whole computer and start from scratch?

I hope not cause saving my files would take a very long time at this rate.

A couple of possibilities: account corruption is an obvious one, but before you go out and reinstall everything try the following -

1) Repair permissions

2) Go into disk utility and check if the app can see the disk or not. If yes, try and repair it or whatever.

That's what Apple siad to me yesterday when I reported a similar problem. Did not try it yet. Keep me posted!

Hmmm....the Superdrive is not showing under disk utilities

Just the Fujitsu HD
