Saving Excel files to Windows 2000 Server

I am using Microsoft Office:X (with all updates), Jaguar 10.2.8. My excel files reside on a Windows 2000 server. I find that I can save to the server some times but not all of the time. When I cannot save a window shows up saying that a temp file has been created and I then open this file and resave it. This happens maybe 6 out of 10 times. This has just started to happen in the last 2 or 3 months. Any solutions....tried fiddling with Virex-didn't help. Checked out MacWindows.com...tried the advice offered-didn't help. Now the IT guy is threatening to put me on a Windows machine-Help me escape this fate worst then death!!!!

The .xls files reside on the Windows server. The problem does not seem to be a local problem. We have reset permissions on the Windows server, specifically on the folder where these files sit. I have sometimes got the spinning ball as I am waiting to save and then got a message "cannot save file".

Thanks, it will take a while to check some of your suggestions out. We actually have less staff now than in the past so I would "assume" that bandwidth is not the issue. I will pass these suggestions to the IT guy.
