Checking into the wireless security settings in my Linksys. In enabling WEP wireless security, I am supposed to enter a passphrase and something for Key 1, 2, 3, and 4. What kind of numbers are to be entered in these Keys? Is this something I should enable? I heard someone speak of it today. Thought I'd check it out.
You should enable it given it really isn't that hard to set up but is effective at keeping people out if you're concerned about privacy.
What you want to do is enter a few numbers to use as the initial 'passphrase'.
I've got mine set to 64-but 10 hex digits and it would then take my 5-digit passphrase and turn into into four 10-character combinations of numbers and characters you know as key 1, 2, 3 and 4.
I think you should also be able to set the default key, but usually Key 1 is used as the password when connected to the router from an Airport card.
Ugh! I generated passphrases for each key, cliked okay, and then lost connection with the router. I had to go to my Windows PC which is wired to the router and disable WEP so my Powerbook wireless setup could recieve once again. How is this? How can I enable WEP and still use it's wireless capabilities with my Powerbook?
If you were connected to your router wirelessly from your PB when you changed the security setting, then you WOULD lose the connection because your PB wouldn't be set up to connect using the new key.
But not to worry. The solution is simple.
As soon as you lose the connection, give the airport menu a poke, your wireless network will still be broadcasting. Select it again, now you'll get a dialog asking for the WEP passphrase - That's the 5 character word you put in from which was generated the 4 keys. Type that in, hit enter, and you're back in business. If you get an error, just close the lid of your PB and wait a couple of minutes and then open it again and try again.
I was doing some testing the other day and changed my router about 20 times, and it worked every time on my PowerBook. My WindowsXP laptop was a different story
