I have a 2, maybe 3 of those 9.5mm or 12mm laptop hard drives laying around, two of them are 4-gig, one is 6-gig.

Any suggestions as to how these can be made useful for storage? Maybe I could create an external USB mini-RAID or something?

How about a nice firewire enclosure? 6GB would let you back up most/all of your critical data. Currently I use our iPod to backup our iPhoto collection, but am planning to upgrade my Pismo's HD and make it into a portable drive and take over from the iPod.

Either that or sell it on eBay. People with PB1400's are always looking for more space

Wink

Yup, a FW enclosure is an idea - though my current ibook only has a USB port... are there dual USB/Firewire enclosures?

And... this is stretching it... is there an enclosure that will handle multiple drives?

eBay... yeah, that's an option. Have never sold, only bought. Maybe I'll find someone to trade me a new 2000-series Newton, or a motherboard for my Mac Portable!

Yeap, there are dual firewire/usb encloures.

However, I have yet to see a dual 2.5 inch encloure. That would be very cool, mini-RAID

Check out eBay and http://www.compgeeks.com/products.asp?cat=CAS for housings. The compgeek selection comes and goes but they are really good to work with.

Good Luck

There's not much point putting a notebook drive into an enclosure if you can only access it with a USB 1.1 connector. Would be horribly slow. I don't think you'll get too much on eBay but that's worth a shot (or donating them to a school).

am considering putting my old PowerBook drives to use as well. Check this link out:

http://www.globalpremier.com/25-enclosure.htm

Its an American shop, but the prices for USB 2 and/or Firewire look good even after currency conversion; before S&H and import duty, gst.

I have a 12.5mm 500GB and 9.5mm 10G ex-PowerBook drives wanting to be used again... still thinking... wishing...

Cheers
